Pirate Bay founders found guilty

Postby Redeye on Fri Apr 17, 2009 9:38 am

A court in Sweden has jailed four men behind The Pirate Bay (TPB), the world's most high-profile file-sharing website.
Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were found guilty of breaking copyright law and were sentenced to a year in jail.
They were also ordered to pay 30m kronor (£2.4m) in damages.
In a Twitter posting, Mr Sunde said: "Nothing will happen to TPB, this is just theatre for the media."
Mr Sunde went on to say that he "got the news last night that we lost".
"It used to be only movies, now even verdicts are out before the official release."
The damages were awarded to a number of entertainment companies, including Warner Bros, Sony Music Entertainment, EMI, and Columbia Pictures.
The Pirate Bay is the world's most high profile file-sharing website and was set up in 2003 by anti-copyright organisation Piratbyran, but for the last five years it has been run by individuals.
Millions of files are exchanged using the service every day.
No copyright content is hosted on The Pirate Bay's web servers; instead the site hosts "torrent" links to TV, film and music files held on its users' computers.
Critics of the trial say Swedish authorities only brought the case because of pressure from the US film industry.

And the story is not finished. I think it will end in front of the European Court of Justice.
Especially if the USA and its lobbies have put pressure on the Swedish government...

Hollywood vs The Pirate Bay

STOCKHOLM — A dozen Hollywood production companies have filed a new lawsuit against file-sharing Web site The Pirate Bay.

Columbia Pictures, Disney Enterprises, Universal Studios and 10 others are demanding the site's operators be fined and prevented from distributing TV-series including "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" and films such as "Batman."

The Pirate Bay has remained in operation despite guilty verdicts in a copyright trial in Sweden earlier this year against the site's operators, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde and Fredrik Neij. Carl Lundstrom, who financed the site, was also convicted in that case.

All were sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay a combined 30 million kronor ($4.1 million) in damages

And still, after the judgement, and selling the site to a company that goes fast into the verge of bankruptcy, the site lives on more or less normally.

Suggestions and views; what do you think is the next step if The Pirate Bay at some point changes the way it functions now-where will the next move be? Where do the users go?

I think if PB & all the other torrent sites get shut down, it wont matter.
The pirates will just come up with something else. Just like Napster many years ago, then it was Kazaa, then Limewire, then Suprnova, then Piratebay. There's ALWAYS a way !
