Ha, I was trying to be funny, but failed once again. Dear Henry is referring to the famous Kafka novel The Metamorphosis/The Transformation (Die Verwandlung) where the salesman Gregor Samsa wakes up and find himself transformed to a large insect. But you you are on the right track, I believe Cronenbergs the Fly was inspired by Kafkas novel.

Although Prague's tacky-tourism biz offers big slices of Kafka - and there's an underwhelming museum - calling him a Czech writer is a half truth. His was a Jewish family speaking German and Yiddish at home. He studied in German, and spoke Czech to communicate with servants, tradespeople and whores.

Kafka lived 1883-1924, so for all but his last years he was a Bohemian subject of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. German was the language of the upper and educated classes in Bohemia, and FK wrote the language with exquisite poise and precision which weirdly exacerbates the nebulous awfulness of events and impressions in 'The Castle', 'The Trial' and 'Metamorphosis'.

about FK and Cronenberg, I was lucky to visit a marvelous pop-up museum for DC's masterpieces and there were a lot of his movies' props there...... the pods from The Fly, the TV from videodrome, the car from Crash, hmmm the franchi shotgun from Scanners (? or is my mind playing tricks on me again ? prolly mixing it up with the brabant killers ......... and it was in Prague right on the old town square! I was so lucky to be in Prague right at that time.

I did 'do' Kafka at school. But I wasn't trying to be a snooty Eurotrash,the US system just has its own different canon of sacred texts. I had to find Allen Ginsberg and Philip Roth for myself.

It's my belief the late great Philip would agree that an inky nasty thingy would not deter any healthy straight guy from sliding his schlong into Roxy.

And it's a certain fact that he was another American gentleman who was always delighted to visit Prague and fuck his brains out.

I did 'do' Kafka at school.

As did I, but I have to admit I also sometimes read a book just because I like to (!), including some biographies, and that Kafka guy is quite a character. Btw tattooes (to stay on topic in this thread) was something Kafka wrote about in the short story "In the Penal Colony" ("In der Strafkolonie"), where the the condemned prisoners in a penal colony are punished by having their crimes tattooed on their body by a machine over and over and deeper and deeper until they die...
