I have resorted to a few tricks to make this look better and though i share them with you so that your olden goldies might look a little bit more gold.
For DVD's on the PC:
Try VLC media Player (free). Turn on the Video->Deinterlace->Yadif(2x) or Yadif. Also try to change the uppscaling according to this guide:

A very cool feature of this player is that you can slow down video as much as you wish. Those cumshots never looked so fun
!Screen/Image output:
Now there is a saying that goes similar to: "you cannot get a better image then what you have", or "crap in, crap out". Well no longer is this true. Sony recently introduced something called "Reality Creation" on their TV's and Projectorns. And believe it or not, it actually makes the image sharper without loosing detail, it's almost like magic. But dont trust me, go and test it yourself, a setting of 35 is just super in my opinion.
We want 3D today! Not a 3D video source? Not a problem!
Now i know many dont like 3D video but for you guys that want to try it out, let me suggest a great player, "Tridef Media Player (Free to try). It has a fantastic 2D->3D converter for DVD-videos. Try it and make sure the extreme quality mode is on (Ctrl-E). With a medium depth setting (50), it is really good, not cartony at all. The action pops out, just make sure to be on your toes and ready to duck in case the actors dick turns your way! (You actually select if you want the 3d to pop in the setting)
I dont have to tell you that i use all of the above together and enjoy my old DVD's a bit more than i use to.
